Dave Schweisguth's page

I'm on Facebook. I'm @daveschweisguth on YouTube, Instagram and Twitter. I'm easy to find elsewhere on the Internet. Please do!

Software etc.

I write software. I worked at Procurated, Redbubble (check out my shop!), Zero, Indiegogo, Fandor, NileGuide, Radar Networks, Healthline Networks, Grand Central Communications (all in San Francisco), Applied Biosystems in San Jose and Foster City, CA, Pangea Systems (later DoubleTwist) in Oakland, CA and CuraGen in New Haven, CT. See also Dave Schweisguth on LinkedIn and Dave Schweisguth on Github.

Before that I earned a Ph.D. in biophysics in Dr. Peter Moore's laboratory at Yale. For my dissertation, I used nuclear magnetic resonance to determine the solution structures of the anticodon loops of initiator and elongator methionine tRNA. They turned out to be exactly the same, which was surprising to tRNA aficionadi.

You can find some writing on programming and such on my blog, Dave Schweisguth in a Bottle. If someone else thought of a topic first I might have written about it on Stack Overflow, where I go by Dave Schweisguth.

While a graduate student, I helped out with the Silicon Graphics FAQs and the documentation for tcsh.

Music

I sing the American songbook, classic musical theater and a little jazz. I love obscure (but worthwhile) songs, interesting lyrics, rarely-done verses and extra choruses. Connect with me on line (see above) to find about upcoming shows!

Past shows:

Selections from my own shows are on my YouTube channel. Shows which I wrote and emceed for Society Cabaret are on their YouTube channel.

I also sing at Martuni's, the Alley, Curtain Call (now first Sundays at Martuni's), the California Jazz Conservatory (stay tuned for a new open mic schedule) and other venues.

You can also listen to me on YouTube. Please subscribe!

I volunteer at the Museum of Performance and Design, mostly cataloging the Bob Johnson collection of sheet music. A partial catalog of the Johnson Collection is on line.

I host the Paul Rose Library, the collection of sheet music and related materials left behind by the great amateur singer Paul Rose. For updates on the Library, join the Friends of Paul Rose Facebook group, or ask me to add you to the mailing list.

Community

I live in the southwest corner of San Francisco's Mission District.

I led the Juri Commoners, the volunteer group for Juri Commons, the park on my block, for many years. I've retired from that and the group is now seeking a new leader. Please contact me if you're interested. See the Juri Commons meetup group for details.

I'm also part of Fix 26, the Central 26th Street Neighborhood Coalition. Join us to keep one another informed, build a neighborhood watch and more.

I lead the Bay Area Beagles, a group of beagle owners who meet in parks around the San Francisco Bay Area, about twice a month, to exercise and socialize our dogs.

Fun and games in San Francisco

I've been systematically exploring San Francisco for years, with the invaluable help of Huxley Beagle, Wallace Beagle and Halley Beagle. Some results are on the web on sfgazetteer.com, and sometimes I tweet interesting finds.

In 2017 Huxley and I completed walking the length of every street in San Francisco. It had taken about 8 years. (Wallace joined the pack in 2013.) In 2018-2019 I ate at every restaurant within 0.75 miles of my home, in order of distance.

I've played the Guess Where San Francisco photo-finding game since 2008. I host the game's scoring software, Guess Where Watcher. See GWW's About page for more about the software.

An extended group of friends and I competed for years in the Chinese New Year Treasure Hunt and other treasure hunts (very successfully) and the Bay Area Night Game, DASH and other puzzle hunts and escape rooms. I also wrote and ran several hunts myself, including "Trial By Juri" around Juri Commons, "Huxley Beagle's Union Square Scramble" and Odd Man Out in the Tenderloin.

Do Not Question Me was the blog where our gang once chronicled pub quiz and other entertaining pursuits.
